1978 – MOOMINS IN POLAND

In 1978, Tove travelled to Poland to monitor work on a televised Moomin puppet animation. From 1977–81, Polish studio Semafor (Studio Malych Form Filmowych) produced the animated series Opowiadania Muminków (The Moomins).

The series employed traditional cut-out animation techniques, and before each episode was filmed, the script was sent to Finland for Tove and Lars Jansson to check. The series was aired in Germany and Poland in 8–9-minute episodes. It became particularly popular in the UK, where it was narrated by the comedian Richard Murdoch. In Finland, the series was shown with the original soundtrack at the turn of the 1980s. In 2008, producer Tom Carpelan and director Maria Lindberg made a film based on the Polish animation called Moomin and Midsummer Madness (Muumi ja vaarallinen juhannus). In 2009, they began to process old Polish material for a 3D-animation called Moomins and the Comet Chase (Muumi ja punainen pyrstötähti).
